Dexter Gordon - Complete Blue Note Sixties Sessions

This is IT--the complete sessions of one of jazz's greatest tenor saxophonists for one of the world's premier jazz labels. During the flowering of bebop, Gordon was among the first sax players to translate Charlie Parker's ideas from the alto to the tenor. In the '60s, the sound had more of an edge--hence, hard bop--and Gordon was right there. Still, the man could deliver a ballad to melt the hardest of hearts. Witness his soloing on the ballad standard "Where Are You?"--warm and mellow, but with a gutsy, robust core.
As a bonus, this set features many jazz figures who either came into their own or were at the height of their powers in the '60s, as well as some neglected figures. The great pianist/composer Sonny Clark, present on much of this set, was an overlooked innovator who was later paid tribute by modern avant-icon composer/saxophonist John Zorn. Freddie Hubbard, Billy Higgins, Bobby Hutcherson and Horace Parlan accompanied Gordon on some of the best straight-ahead jazz albums of the period, and are included here as well. Inventive, imaginative, solid, swinging, this is the perfect gift from/to a tenor sax lover.
